If you're a developer and not also an artist, your initial 2D game prototypes wont make much of a visual impression. Getting some graphics by an actual artist can make a massive improvement. Here's my big list of resources I use or been recommended. Should be able to find free / minimal cost 2D game assets here covering:- game icons, sprites, tilesets, gui, characters, backgrounds and more.
